Bush Drunk : After a long Absence

Sorry folks for not being able to update the what's ups. Long story short, I am being just a dull a$$ as my school is still on stupid strike. Man, it's been almost 3 weeks!! I tell you, it sucks. There are more to come in the near future so bear with me. While I am at this, why don't you relax and have a little time to go over this video.

It's funny. He is definitely drunk.

Without further ado...

What A Slack

It's been 3 days since my school is on strike. Right now, there are no classes going on campus except the night classes. Zilch! This is a state-wide strike; the teachers are on the strike for pleading improvements in their teaching environment. There are over 150,000 full-time students that are currently staying at home, or may be having fun over this unexpected longer Spring breaks... Just so you know, for the students, the reading week (a week off during the winter semester) that happened a week back + the strike can make over 10 to 15 day break in a row.

What teachers want is quite simple.

"smaller classes and more faculty so every student would get more time, more attention, and more feedback. " (OPSEU)

So they are refusing to teach while they want to better their quality in college education system. But refusing to teach really accomplish this? Doesn't really make sense, does it? I think it has more to do with the issue below-

"their salary maximum should be increased to $94,000." (The Record)

Up to this point, I really don't care about how much salary increase they'd get.

A few things that I hate about this strike is, first off, I am paying the money for learning, not having a 2 week off in the middle of my semester. 2nd, my right for learning is disrupted a big time by the school and the school faculty. They are the key elements for providing quality education, so settle down now!! 3rd and above all, there is a big chance that this winter semester overlaps into the summer break which starts in May. Which also means my summer becomes a week shorter. I was planning on returning to Japan right after the semester so I could work right when I come home. But because of this strike, the time in Japan may get squashed. I hate it.

In general, there may be a chance that some students lose some important, upgrading summer opportunities, like co-op, and upgrading exams. The school and its faculty should not have any rights to violate any opportunities for students. After all, the students are that ones paying for their education, and that is how the schools and their faculty make their own living. Without the students, these people cannot put their food on their tables.

I simply hate the idea of strike. I really do.

Life Skills

<- Put me up high!!

It is in the middle of so called "Reading Week", an entire week off from school, I am urged to read a book for one of my classes.

The book I chose is the one on the left, "The First Book Of Life Skills" by Larry James. I picked this book at a secondhand store at $0.25, I could not help, but seeing all these piled old books, I had to buy something from there. (I LOVE books!! I buy them even if I don't read them :O)

A general description of this book if I'd have to give, I guess is to illustrate how life can be well- accomplished by distinguishing its purposes and goals, planning ahead of life, and executing them well in precise order.

It is so far well worth reading, and hey, it was 25 cents.

So here is a quite from Victor Hugo used in the book-

" He who every morning plans the transaction of
the day, and follows out that plan, carries a
thread that will guide him through the labyrinth
of the most busy day. The orderly arrangement of
this time is like a ray of light which darts itself
through all his occupations. But where no plan
is laid, where the disposal of time is surrendered
merely to the chance of incidents, all things lie
huddled together in on chaos, which admits of
neither distribution nor review."

SNL Skit (Very Funny)

上はSNL(Saturday Night Live:アメリカのComedy Show)で放映されたSkitです。

Comments on US v.s. CANADA

Sorry people!! I am in the middle of the test week at school, can't do much right at this moment due to piled assignments!! Here are some of the response I got from the viewers that I thought was intriguing

Here is "JEFF"-さん

Tucker Carlson is an idiot. I'm saying that as an American.
The thing you have to remember about America is that it's a very regional(地域で分割された)country. It always has been. Don't forget that we had a civil war between the north and south and those divisions (分裂) still exist - it is like two countries with completely differing views, and it's split practically(実質的に) right down the middle (just look at the last two elections, both of which were decided by just one state). It is not like other countries where within each region half the people might feel one way and half another... no, there are several regions of the country and within each region 100% of people feel one way and 0% feel the other. (Ok, that's exaggeration, but you get the idea.)

That said, Canada is a country of something like 25 million people, America is a country of 300 million. So while Tucker Carlson may be an idiot and he put it in a pretty offensive(攻撃的)way, it is true that Canada does not have nearly the economic or political clout (影響力)of the US. It's just a fact. They have a lot of land but not many people; Japan has much more influence (影響) in the world, for example. Many US *states* have more people, bigger economies and even bigger military than Canada has (via their National Guard).

it's funny and a little sad when people proudly proclaim their ignorance(無知であること). unfortunately Canada's becoming ever more Americanized that there must've been Canadians who took that comment way too literally(文字通り). have some sense of humour, peeps..

Here is "Pr0digalS0n" (放蕩息子)さん

Tucker Carlson is an idiot. Sadly, as other people have noted, he represents (代表する) the opinions that many Americans have, especially opinions that are nationalistic (民族主義的), racist (人種差別的), anti-immigrant (反移民的), and pro-business (ビジネス趣向的). Unfortunately, many people who currently run the government right now in the US also share those opinions as well. 2008 seems a long way away... >=P

US V.S. CANADA : Never Ending Fistfight

:There is a life you can save by a click. IT'S HERE!!!

Here is what had to be argued in the Canadian national news show called "The Hour". This show is intended especially for young Canadians (thus the viewers can be at any age), it breaks down and spoon-feeds some news and some complected social deterioration happening today.

One of them is the video you are about to see. This whole argument is triggered by a well known American TV host whose name is Tucker Carlson. He insults the entire Canada and its nation by calling them "a stalker", "a retarded cousin you pat him on his head".

Before checking out the video, the following is some of the words used in it, so you'll know what they are talking about.

Also I will write down what was discussed in the first part of the video where Tucker pounds on his argument points.

So, after the video, you tell me what you think of this. I will discuss my point of view on the following posts.

------------------------Tucker's Point--------------------------

"Canada is essentially a stoker, stalking the United States. Canada has a little picture of us (the US) in its bedroom, right? Canada spend all of its time thinking about the United States, obsessing over the United States. It's an unrequired love between Canada and the United States. We, meanwhile, don't even know Canada's name. We pay NO attention at all. First off, anybody with any ambition at all intelligence has left Canada, now living in New York. Second, anybody who sides with Canada internationally in the debate between the US and Canada, say Belgium, who's someones opinion we shouldn't care about in the first place. And third, Canada is a sweet country, there is like a retarded cousin you see at Thanksgiving, sort of patting him on his head, you know, he's nice, but you don't take him seriously...."

わからないところは "Could you go over what you just did?"

Pseudo Access :

Like I said, don't be too shy for clicking. It's all good!

So here I am, 2:40 in the morning, writing tonight's highlight. My brain becomes half asleep by the time the clock goes beyond 1 a.m.; I will try not to write anything too random or confusing, so bear with me for a minute or two.

Tonight's post is going to be one of the best materials for those of you who are willing to or planning on coming to abroad for studying. Or, who are curious enough to take a closer look at what are academic classes like.

Today, I hid my camera in my pencil case (Panasonic D-Snap) and recorded the class, so you'll be able to precisely grasp what you need for your preparation for TOEFL, TOEIC and coming to study in Canada!!

The quality of the video is good enough to hear what's being discussed, but not enough to see what's written on the whiteboard. Also, the angle of the camera appears to be a bit tilted. That is due to the fact that I was hiding my camera in the pencil case.

Why? I wasn't very sure if my recording of the lecture could be incompatible with some copy rights that the college and the professor may hold.

So this is just designed to be distributed to ones that came to my Blog and chose to read and see it.

This is my engineering mechanics class, so it's no worries if, in case, you did not understand what's being discussed in the video.

"24" The Mutual Hook :

OK. No way!!!

Here is the TV show that got my wife and I totally hooked. It is a TV show from FOX called Twenty Four. Currently, the 5th season is running at this side of the ocean. I can't say much about this show mainly because 1)that will reduce the amount of entertainment (it is more like a twisted combination of intensity and frustration!!) for you, and 2) the 5th season is not being shown in Japan just yet.

So, let the video explain how time-clicking, highly charged show that is!! The show should be coming to Japan anytime shortly (I suppose), so you should go down to your local rental store, and start watching the show from the 1st episode of season 1. You will miss a lot of detail without watching these first. (Of course, you'll have fun even without them).

Without further ado...

The World According to USA : アメリカから見た世界

<- Can anyone spot Turkey on the map? I can. Please click if you couldn't.

This is what I got from a good friend of mine in the States a few days ago . I thought it was funny and a bit pathetic, at the same time, illustrated some of the people I met in the states well in a very cynical way.

This reminded me of an incident, which I asked this girl in my psychology class back in the days I was in an American university. I asked her to draw a map of Japan, and then point out where "Beijing (China)" is on that map (yeah, it is a leading question technique to find out especially if she knew Japan and China are two different countries) . The tiny deformed Island it may be, she proudly pointed a corner on the map, and stressed with a pen, saying "IT'S HERE!"

She also spotted other corner and said it was Tokyo. Of course, she spelled Tokyo, "Tokio"...

It is one of those things you encounter when Japan is featured on TV shows, and 9 out of 10, somehow you hear this strange Chinese music right on the back of them. That is how little they know about us and other Asian countries.

If you take a good look at Asia, you may notice the red spot that is on the wrong place. It should not have been on Korea. I am not very sure if this was an intention as to show more ignorance, or they really didn't know where these red spots should have really been.

BUT, if I were to draw Zimbabwe, Africa, the same will happen. So I won't say much no more...

pathetic:哀れ/at the same time:同時に/illustrated:(図や絵などで)表す/cynical :皮肉な/remind :思い出させる/incident:思いがけない出来事/psychology:心理学/leading question:誘導尋問/ point out:指す・示す/deformed:形の崩れた/proudly:胸をはって/stressed:強調した/9 out of 10: 10回に9回は/intention:意図したこと/ignorance:無知なこと/due to the fact :という事実によって/I won't say much no more...

I AM CANADIAN!!

<- My Japanese sucked on one of the entries below, I took it off right away. Sorry Folks!

Hey, I'm ah... I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader....
I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled....
and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,
although I'm certain they're really really nice.
I have a Prime Minister, not a president.
I speak English and French, not American.
And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'.
I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.
I believe in peace keeping, not policing, diversity, not assimilation,
and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.
A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch,
and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed' !!!!
Canada is the second largest landmass!
The first nation of hockey!
and the best part of North America!
My name is Joe!! And I am Canadian!!!

After all these things happening in the States, why Conservative today?? Nothing offensive, but that is my biggest question. Wouldn't scandals happen anytime at the both ends anyway?

But at the same time, a change is refreshing; that maybe was what Canada really needed the most. We'll see what happens...

Bilingual Manifesto :

From the Top Left
  • Liberal - Prime Minister, Paul Martin:
  • NDP- Jack Layton:
  • Bloc- Gilles Duceppe:
A friend in need is a click indeed.

As many of you may already know, the official language in Canada is English and French. French is mainly spoken at the north-east side of Canada, where you see "Quebec" on the map, and English for the rest of the country. Pretty much everything you see and buy comes with both English and French. i.e. a box of cereal has English on one side, and French on the other. It is quite interesting, like in a store, I could easily loose track of what I was looking at, and be left out with a handful of new words, none of which make any sense; all of a sudden what pops into my sight is a bag of sugar, a full of descriptions in some words that somehow do not register into my head as quickly as they usually do. So I get closer, and go "ah, French." English and French writing is quite confusing in a distance, and especially in such a very quick glace.

Would you be able to imagine seeing how people from abroad could easily get amused by any little triggers that the local people don't even notice? For instance, the local people go to the store and find a box of serials facing its French side. It should be nothing to them. My wife and I, on the other hand, find it quite amusing; we try to fake the French sound of it, and make a good laugh at each others sound, and chuckle the whole way down to the cashier. So having the English-French environment in Canada is still just something we cannot neglect.

The same is applied to the candidates for the Canadian federal election campaign which is currently happening nationwide. There are four candidates for the Prime Minister, and they all speak both English and French. Yes, they are bilingual, some maybe tri or more. I am sure they were urged in order for them to be fully eligible and stay being efficient candidates for the rest of their campaigns. To my surprise, they have debates in English and French, twice in both languages, relatively in the same topics discussed in one session.

Having said that, they heat up each time. They are pretty much about bashing down on each others opinion and inconsistencies. From a very third point of view (since I don't have the right to vote, damn it!), having them justify their positions from imputations and accusations from 3 other directions, it is almost like overlapping the sight where you see your own older sisters pulling each others hair, fighting (or I'd rather say, beating the crap out of each other) right in front of you. And, you intend not to do anything about it at all but staying on the sideline because you are constantly being picked on by them, and can't always fight back because they are a lot bigger and smarter than you. It's one of those things you'd see when you were a little and having two older sisters that were 5 year or more older than you.

It is, at least to me, relatively as shocking that these candidates are bilingual. Do you know how intelligent you ought to be in order to become fully bilingual?? Do you know what it really takes to be bilingual?? I bet you do!! You gotta be! Otherwise you would not even come see my blog, right??

In contrast to that, what do we have?? Junichiro!!? Have you ever seen his profiles? What has he really done today?? His profile in a website particularly chose to used the word "yuugaku" for his education history (he's spent sometime in England); simply put, it is a college dropout!! Common!! These four candidates at least have Masters in law or economics!!

Due to that "Goyuugaku", his English is broken enough to dance under Bush administration!! What in god's name would the Prime Minister of Japan wear a pair blue Ralph Lauren (well known American Clothes company) shirt with Bush, and waves at bunch of cameras with Bush standing right beside him?? Where is our identity now??!! What the crap are we doing?? Does he know what kind of messages we are involuntarily sending to the world??!! It is all their protocol!! WHY?? WHAAAY??

Get back to where I was, Canadian Prime Minister and its candidates are all bilingual. I think it is something I thought was interesting enough to write about.

So, I hear on the latest news which Japan may raise its tax percentage up to nearly 7.5% in the next few years; does it really? See, it would have freaked me out if I were still in Japan and not going through all that I ended up going through here in Ontario Canada.

Set aside "very" young readers here for a second, remember how it was like when the tax had risen from 3% to 5% back in 1990's? Didn't you feel like you were totally ripped off from the government?? I did. So, yeah, yeah, we all know how painful that is. But what's more painful, my wife and I've already experienced this exquisite pain again by coming over to Ontario Canada; since the day we stepped into this mysterious land!

Don't be too surprised, Ontario has two consumption taxes that add up to 15%. 15%!! for all consumptions except groceries!! You want to see what they are, the following is the breakdown--

We were so ignorant; we didn't know anything about these taxes until we've actually come to land in Canada.

These taxes of course are hitting very, very hard on us every time we go shopping. It is, without any question, affecting our decision making on any purchasing. It is more likely for all of us to make judgements based on what's shown on the price tags, but here, WE DON'T!! We have to roughly calculate the total amount "including the 15% tax" before the payment is completed!! Otherwise, we will going to embarrass ourselves by innocently asking the lady behind the cashier, "We were wondering why the total is so much now..."

I am quite sure that the lady behind the cashier will give us a very sharp, grim look, and pretty much yell at us exactly how much the taxes are here in Ontario.

It is (wicked) 15%!!

According to what Wiki (a free online encyclopedia) says, the France government was the first one that invented what is known as "the Consumption Tax" today. I think whoever that came out with such a vicious idea, needs to go straight down to the burning HELL!! (Please excuse my language, I am not always like this)

So the day is coming folks! Stay on top of what's ahead of you. My wife and I are painfully aware of how it's like to go through all that. It is I tell you, definitely coming and creeping its way up to you, a lot closer today.

The Ultimate Way of Learning Slangs:究極スラング学習法

<- Whazzzza! Fo All You Beotches who wanna C to the L to the I to the C to the K.

Although I was not that interested in learning slangs at all, here is what my friend Nathan from school had to share with me to displace my jaw from laughing too hard.

The following is what came out from the site, which translated CNN to a whole new set of language.

A space capsule saggin' tha first comet dizzust samples ta Earth parachuted ta a pre-dawn frontin' in tha Utah desert today, draw'n chea fizzle elated scientists. The dust grains, believed ta be pristine leftova from tha B-to-tha-izzirth of tha solar system, contain mizzle of tha organic molecizzles necessary fo` life. Some of tha particles is thought ta be wanna be gangsta tizzy tha sun cuz this is how we do it.

After All These Things She's done and She is Still Flying!?

(From Canada.com)
This is what I found in Canada.com. I am sure you know who she is. Yes, she is Martha Stewart. I used to always close my email to friends with her name, claiming,

"I always care about your life style, so let me know how it is like. Love, your Mather- Martha Stewart"

It has nothing to deal with what I previously wrote in the email. I just thought it was funny to have her name appear on my email just out of nowhere.

Like many of us admit, it takes a lot of guts to undergo the same process again after the 2nd chance is granted. And, after all these things she's done, she still tries to put herself back into where she was before. It is mighty painful to see some of the magazines that put her face on top of the covers. Her omnipotent smile shows too much evil from what she went through. She is everywhere again, minding about all our life styles.

It is so gay that I am writing about her. I really don't care about this woman...

Cheat Sheet :

Cheat Sheet: Engineering Material Class
------------ English follows --------------

My first Canadian school term is now finally over, and it turned out that I've barley squeezed through. After going through all the hustle in the semester, it was no doubt, Canadian colleges and universities set their standards a lot higher than I expected. Comparing in the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores between schools in Canada and the US, for instance, Canada beats the US by setting the minimum score of about 250 (out of 300), whereas the US universities set about 173 average. In most Canadian schools, international students are not usually allowed to take academic courses unless they completely pass the TOEFL, or graduate from English as a Second Language course.

This is downright the reflection of multinational settings of Canada. It is not very surprising to hear multiple languages flying by while visiting a local supermarket. In fact, there are a couple international students like Slovenians, Irani, Egyptians in my engineering course. A part of this is an expediency to me, but is challenging at the same time.

The reason being...

Seeing these people doing their best in their challenging circumstances is very encouraging. It helps me try doing likewise. Thanks to many helps through many friends, I could get over this semester safe and sound.

One of the techniques that I can recommend here for international students who are willing to be successful in their academic performances in Canada is the "Cheat Sheet". This cheating is open and official, which the professors allow in their exams. This cheating comes with a series of restrictions like

If you understand the above conditions, it is free to write whatever on the cheat sheet. Because of the limit in the size of the sheet, it is almost impossible to write all that's been taught (of course, there are many who makes it in tiny writing!) , so your good-guessing plays a crucial roll for successfully completing both making the cheat sheet and performing well in the exam. One frightening fact is that they come up with many questions with applications. Your attendance and understanding of the class is more than essential. Without them you simply fail.

Although I was ready to accept, the unshakable risks that come along with studying abroad are,

I am sure it makes a lot easier if the above is understood and become ready for what's ahead. Otherwise, it is a bit depressing to realize all these in the course of academic study.

So what is the overall merit for this whole deal??

So, I guess I just need to keep doing my own best on this.

ACE IN THE FACE!! :

(From the Top left: Poline, Brett, Matt, Junko, Ken, Jeff, Kate, Andy, Travis)
